BISCARI MUSEUM
The Biscari Museum saved the antique and the “ Wonders” of nature thence
exalting
the study, research and classic celebration, considering the cultural
world of that time
and the new Enlightenment principles.
The museum was founded by Ignazio Paternò Castello V Prince of Biscari
entrusting
the architect Giuseppe Palazzotto with the project and realization.
In 1757 the commemorative medal was coined by the museum foundation but
its
opening took place in 1758.
At the death of Palazzotto in 1764 the charge was given to Francesco
Battaglia who
enlarged the Museum and completed the new and richer collection. The
widespread
fame of the Biscari Museum in the most important European Academies and
the
consequent travellers of the “Grand Tour” convinced the Prince to have
the
Florentine monk Domenico Sestini as a museum guide.
In 1776, the first edition of the “Description of the museum Antiques
and
Natural History Collection of his excellency Prince Ignazio Paternò
Castello
Catanese noble” was published.
It was definitely completed in 1784, and handed down by the travellers’
descriptions,
among whom Goethe in his “Travel in Sicily”, by Federico De Roberto’s
photographs and by the archaeologist Guido Lebertini’s studies.
The Museum, divided in two sections Antiquaria and Naturalia, was
situated
around two court-yards separated by a columned hall. The vast Antiquaria
section,
formed by the “Marble Gallery”, “Etruscan Vase” rooms and “Pottery”
section was
situated around the perimeter of the two court-yards, while the Natural
History
Gallery was in the rooms looking onto today’s Piazza Duca di Genova.
Right on this square, the original one level space, distributed on two
galleries
exhibiting decorated vases and other fictile material and naturalistic
collections,
was, after years, completely modified and raised, and today gives life
to the
Biscari Museum.
A new Museum comes to life, bringing back the historical periods for a
new high
class exposition.
The Fashion Museum, The Grazia Museum, the Mondo del Fashion and
Marella Ferrera’s Haute Couture Atelier are present in the historical
building .
